A Lifetime on the Water

I started fly fishing and tying flies around the age of 12, growing up in Northeastern Pennsylvania, where I had access to abundant trout waters, including the legendary Upper Delaware River—a place my father also discovered at a young age. While attending Lycoming College, I was introduced to Central Pennsylvania’s spring creeks and a vast network of freestone trout streams, further deepening my love for the sport.  My first career took me to Southern Michigan, where I explored even more trout waters and developed a passion for streamer fishing for trout. Michigan also introduced me to steelhead and salmon fishing, as well as additional warm water opportunities. While living in MI I had the chance to travel to saltwater destinations and even South America for incredible fishing adventures.   Most recently, I have fallen in love with the trout waters of North Carolina and the tailwaters of Eastern Tennessee—new frontiers that challenge me with their wily quarry and ever-changing conditions.  My first love is trout fishing, but I love chasing anything with a fly rod in cold water or warm!

Even before I was able to really get my hands on a fly rod, I managed to venture into tying flies.  My father kept a desk set up in the basement that allowed easy access for me to experiment with fly tying materials. I knew some of my father’s favorite patterns and I would attempt to match them. After lots of practice flies, they started to take shape and I began to build my own fly box with some of the old classic patterns such as the wooly bugger, pheasant tail, and the adams to name a few.  Those early patterns taught me the basics that would serve as great fundamental lessons for the rest of my life.  Over the years, materials, hooks and threads have really changed, but the basics are pretty much the same.

Fast forward 35 plus years and I have more love and passion for the sport of fly fishing than ever. If you’re a beginner or seasoned angler, I’m certain I have some things to show you that can add to your book of tricks.  Click below and reach out as I would love to host you for a day on the water.

A Little About Lucky Penny

The idea for Lucky Penny Outfitters began long ago. While working in the home building industry, I pursued my love of fly fishing whenever I had the chance. No matter the season, I could always find something to chase with my fly rod.

After years of learning and enjoying the sport, I found myself inviting friends and family out on my drift boat for all kinds of fishing trips. Over time, I realized that I loved watching others catch fish just as much as I loved fishing myself. Seeing people fall in love with the sport of fly fishing was incredibly rewarding.
So, my wife and I made a commitment—we decided to leave our jobs, move somewhere of our choosing, and build a life doing what we truly loved. I fully committed to becoming a fly fishing guide. Chris Stapleton’s Starting Over became our theme song as we began the process of reinventing our lives.

We explored many options, searching for the perfect place to call home. Ultimately, we fell in love with Western North Carolina, particularly the Pisgah National Forest. In the winter of 2022, we left Southern Michigan and moved to Brevard, NC, ready to embrace a new adventure filled with breathtaking landscapes, waterfalls, and incredible fishing opportunities.

After working a couple seasons with a local outfitter and gaining valuable insight into the local fisheries and what a quality guide service should offer, my wife and I founded Lucky Penny Outfitters, LLC. Our mission is to provide a top-tier guide service by creating exceptional on-the-water adventures throughout Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee from July through early April. We believe in building lasting relationships with our clients—one trip at a time.

From mid-April through June, I collaborate with Cross Current Outfitters on the Upper Delaware River, continuing my passion for guiding in another incredible fishery. Coming back each spring season to enjoy the area where I originally fell in love with fly-fishing for trout.
