Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to have any fly fishing experience to book a trip?

No experience is required—we can start from the basics. If you do have experience, that’s great! We’ll discuss it when booking and tailor your day on the water accordingly.

How many people can go on a trip?

Trips are designed for one or two anglers, as I believe having more than two makes it difficult to provide the personalized attention each customer deserves. The maximum number of anglers per outing is two. If you'd like to introduce your children to fly fishing, I’m happy to accommodate. In this case, I can host two children, but they must be accompanied by a parent.

What do I need to bring?

Lucky Penny Outfitters is a full service outfitter, that means we will provide you with all the gear that you will need for a day on the water. On half day trips, we provide soft drinks/water and snacks. On a full day outing, we’ll provide a deli style lunch. It is important to fill out any dietary restrictions while booking details. That will also be discussed prior to the trip as well.  We will provide rods and real, terminal tackle and waders.

As a guest, you’ll only need to bring the appropriate attire for the weather conditions on the day of our outing.  A hat and sunglasses are important for a day outside.  If you have polarized sunglasses, provide an advantage for seeing the fish in the water. Layered clothing is the best choice to stay comfortable, as mornings can be cool and afternoons may warm up. Be sure to bring a rain jacket in case of inclement weather. Yes, we do fish in the rain! In fact, rainy weather can often lead to excellent fishing conditions with increased fish activity.

We also recommend choosing neutral tones for your personal clothing items (nothing bright or busy with color).  This helps stalking wild fish in crystal clear water.  If you have personal fishing equipment, feel free to bring it if you'd like.

Finally, you will need to purchase a fishing license to cover your day on the water. Licenses can be purchased on-line.

What time do we start?

We will try to accommodate a schedule as best possible, as it’s your day on the water.  But there are some strong factors that happen at different times of the year that will affect best time to be on the water.

For example, early spring is best fishing as the water begins to rise in temperature, so starting at 6:00 isn’t necessary. But as the weather gets hot (July/August), it’s important to start as early as possible as the heat of the afternoon is not conducive to trout fishing.  In the heat of the summer, we typically only do ½ day morning trips as to not kill trout due to exhaustion.

Conversely, smallmouth bass are not that affected by hotter temps, they are a warmwater fish and can function in warmer water wear as trout are cold water fish and do not tolerate water very well over 66 degrees.

Based on the time of your booking, I can cover what I feel best will happen based on the time of your booking.

How do I book?

Fill out the information on “book now tab” completely. Once the inquiry email is received by us, we reach out and confirm the date and discuss general details.  General details will cover where we will potentially fish, what species we’ll target, what time we’ll start and where we might meet up (depending on where you’re staying).

If you’re booking a wading trip, we’ll discuss access and any potential physical limitations that may be of concern.  We’ll cover any questions you may have to make sure you have a practical idea of what your day will look like.  Keep in mind, as the date gets closer, we’ll stay in touch, but we may have to change arrangements if weather or high water comes into play.  It’s hard to know when booking a date out a few weeks/months what conditions will be, but we will put a hard plan together to work forward from.

Once you’re comfortable with arrangements we will put your name on the calendar and a 50% deposit will be required to secure the reservation.
