Float Trips
An excellent way to enjoy a relaxing day on the water is to book a float trip on one of Western North Carolina or Eastern Tennesse’s rivers with Lucky Penny Outfitters. If you’re a wade angler, you can leave your boots at home and sit high in a drift boat without ever getting your feet wet. Of course, there are times that an angler may get out of boat to fish a riff or a section of water. You typically are seated up high above the water with a great vantage point to present to targets all around you. A great option for any time of the year, but a great alternative for colder months of the year. Float fishing can provide excellent dry and nymph fishing opportunities but also provides an excellent avenue for streamer fishing and covering water.

A typical float will be a 7-8 hour day depending on the time of year and can cover anywhere from 2-3 miles to upwards of 10 miles considering conditions and the objectives for the day. When booking a float trip, the location and species will be considered based on the time of year to ensure the best fishing experience. We can almost always find cold water in Eastern Tennessee to chase trout, but summertime is an excellent time to take advantage of smallmouth bass fishing. Please check out our "Rivers We Fish" page to explore some of the available options. We can help you choose the best location based on the time of year you plan to fish.

A full day float trip usually starts around 8:00 am, depending on the time of year and conditions. A deli style lunch, snacks and soft drinks/water are provided. All gear necessary to fish is provided, but if you have a rod that you would like to use, feel free to bring it along. The only thing you’ll be responsible for bringing is the appropriate personal apparel for the weather conditions that day. There is room in the boat for an extra layer of clothes and a rain jacket.

A full day float trip is 600.00* (1 or 2 anglers)
*Deposit policy- 50% down upon booking confirmation, 7 day cancellation policy.

Wade Trips

A wade fishing trip for trout is a great way to enjoy the outdoors that Western North Carolina and the Pisgah National Park have to offer. The mountains of Western North Carolina have some amazing landscape to take in and contain some of the most beautiful mountain streams to explore and lets not forget about the amazing colors of the trout that we pursue there. A wade trip is a great way to get started in fly fishing or enjoy what the local waters have to offer. Most streams are smaller to medium size rivers of which you can see further information on the “waters we fish”.

For a wade trip outing, we provide all the gear you need- waders, fly-rods and all terminal tackle. On a half day wade trip, we’ll provide snacks and drinks. A typical half day of fishing is 4 hours on the stream in addition to travel. A full day wade trip will include lunch as well as drinks. As a client, you are responsible to dress appropriately for current weather conditions. Please see QA section for further details of what to bring.

Spring on the Upper Delaware
From Mid-April till about the first of July you can find me and my drift boat on the Upper Delaware River System. Based out of Starlight, PA, I work with one of the most experienced, long standing, professional group of guides on the Upper Delaware River-Cross Current Outfitters. Lead by owner and Upper Delaware Veteran Guide-Joe Demaldaris, the Cross Current Crew maintains a great understanding of what’s happening on the river and what it takes to fool the wild trout that live there. The trout that live there are among some of the most fickle fish to fool and require a well presented, drag free drift with the proper pattern to produce a take. Along with the guide service, Cross Current Outfitter operates out of a Full-Service Orvis Endorsed Fly Shop located right along the Shehawken Launch on the lower West Branch of the Delaware River. Having grown up around the Upper Delaware System from a young age, I like to say that I’m returning to my home water every year where my first love of fly fishing began. The Upper Delaware is a magical place in the spring. It is known as being a bug factory which presents world class match the hatch dry fly fishing. The season kicks off with the fabled Hendrickson Hatch in April and then continues through spring hosting almost every eastern mayfly and caddis species. Some of the stronger hatches include Beatis, Grannoms, march brown, grey fox, Suplhurs, Drakes and Isos to name a few. Prime time is may and June, but because the East and West Branch of the Delaware are both tailwater fisheries, they can provide fishing all summer long. Please click the link below to book your date with me for a float trip on one of the finest trout rivers in the Eastern United States. If you want to find out more about the Upper Delaware river system, the species that live there and the hatches that you can experience through the summer, take a look at the links from Cross Currents website.
